Know?

I don't know anything better than I know me. And I'm still getting to know me.  
In hopes of finding a few more of "us" I'll devote some words to introduction from time to time. Stories, typically, because I can't honestly use the word "facts".  I'm suspicious of facts. I think most of what we say we "know" is really just what we "believe."

 The book by John J. Ratey and Richard Manning rang so clearly in my head that I read it three times in about 5 weeks. I was still getting good stuff out of it in the third reading. Yeah, I'm recommending it. I got it at the library. I'm adding it to mine.

A quote from Steve Martin and an excellent book by Cal Newport. He explains how your passion isn’t something out there waiting for you to discover it.  It’s more like something you realize after you have been doing it for a while. After you get good at it and can see that it fits.

Never tried blogging before. I’m like a kid learning to ride a bike. Don’t know, no confidence, running on faith, wobbling all over the place. Just  keep going. Just keep going. We live in the age of information surplus, when there are answers and shortcuts and highlights and notes and summaries for everything. But not nearly enough time to even be aware of them.

The key question isn't, "what's the answer?"

The key question is, "what's the question?

Fear Pays

Told to me about 40 years ago by a very bright friend of mine recently out of grad school at Columbia by way of Stanford. He explained further. "When things get shaky, people want to put their money behind the thickest walls. The thickest walls in the world are around the United States. People will put their money here to avoid losing it. They won't be concerned about maximizing their earnings. We get richer, the rest of the world gets poorer. All we have to do is make sure the rest of the world stays scared."

I had never thought about it, but it made perfect sense immediately. The protection racket. Second oldest profession in the world. "Give us money or, you know, something might happen to your store." Or your kids, or your wife, or your wealth. "No,no. We aren't putting a gun to your head. We're putting a gun to the bad guy's head. Because if we don't, HE will put a gun to your head."
